AI Tools
What it does
AI Tools uses artificial intelligence to speed up two everyday menu tasks. Menu Scanner turns a photo or PDF of a physical menu into ready-to-edit menu items, so you don't have to type them all in by hand. Menu Translator automatically translates your menu into the other languages your restaurant offers, so guests can read it in their own language without you writing every translation yourself. Both tools live under AI Tools in the side menu.
Getting started
Menu Scanner
- Open AI Tools > Menu Scanner.
- Tap Scan menu and choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WEBP) or a PDF of your existing menu, up to 20 MB.
- Wait a few seconds while the menu is read and turned into a list of items with names and prices. You can cancel the scan at any time while it's running.
- Review the recognized items. Each one shows a name and a price you can correct directly.
- Assign a category to the items — either pick one category and apply it to everything at once, or open an item to set its own category. If the category you need doesn't exist yet, create it on the spot without leaving the page.
- Tap the arrow on any item to expand it and fill in extra details the scan may have picked up, such as description, calories, quantity, spice level, vegan flag, or allergens.
- Remove any item that was misread, or add one manually if something was missed.
- Once every item has a name and a category, tap Add to create them all in your catalog at once.
Menu Translator
- Open AI Tools > Menu Translator.
- Pick a language from the dropdown at the top. Only languages you've turned on for your public menu appear here.
- The page shows your full menu — categories, items, descriptions — automatically translated into the selected language. Switch between a list view and a card view with the toggle in the toolbar.
- Check the usage bar to see how many characters have been translated this month against your plan's monthly allowance.
- If you want to force fresh translations (for example after fixing a typo in the original text), use Clear Cache to wipe the saved translations for your menu, then reopen a language to translate again.
Key things to know
- Menu Scanner works from a single photo or PDF at a time; scan again to add another page or another menu.
- Scanned items aren't saved to your catalog until you review them and tap Add — nothing is created automatically in the background.
- The scanner tries to guess a category for each item from the photo; if it can't find a good match, you'll need to pick one yourself before you can add the items.
- Menu Translator shows your menu read-only — it's a preview of what guests will see in that language, not an editor. To change the underlying text, edit the item in the catalog in your default language.
- Translations are cached, so switching back to a language you already viewed this session (or one that's already been translated before) doesn't use up any more of your monthly allowance.
- Every plan has a monthly character allowance for translation (some plans are unlimited). The counter resets automatically at the start of each calendar month — you don't need to do anything.
- If you hit the monthly limit, the menu falls back to showing the original text for anything that hasn't been translated yet, and a warning banner appears. Already-translated text keeps showing normally.
- Clear Cache deletes all saved translations for your menu. The next time anyone views a translated language, it gets translated again from scratch, which uses up allowance — use this only when you've changed the source text and need it re-translated.
- Only languages configured for your public/QR menu show up in the Menu Translator's language list.
- Both tools are optional add-ons — if your venue doesn't have AI Tools enabled, the menu section won't appear at all. Only staff with the right permission can use each tool; ask a manager if you don't see AI Tools in your menu.
FAQ
Q: Does Menu Scanner create items automatically, or do I have to review them first?
A: You always review first. After scanning, you see an editable list of items with names, prices, and categories — nothing is added to your catalog until you check everything and tap Add.
Q: What file types can I scan?
A: Photos in JPG, PNG, or WEBP format, or a PDF, up to 20 MB.
Q: The scanner got an item wrong — can I fix it?
A: Yes. Every field is editable before you add the items — you can correct the name, price, category, and any expanded details, remove items you don't want, or add one manually.
Q: Why can't I select some languages in Menu Translator?
A: Only the languages turned on for your public menu appear in the translator. Ask a manager to enable more languages in your menu settings if the one you need is missing.
Q: Will translating my menu cost me every time I open the page?
A: No. Once text has been translated, it's saved and reused — reopening the same language doesn't use up your monthly allowance again, only new or changed text does.
Q: What happens when I run out of monthly translation characters?
A: Any text that hasn't already been translated will show in the original language, with a banner letting you know the limit was reached. Everything already translated keeps working normally. The allowance resets automatically at the start of the next month.
Q: What does "Clear Cache" do, and when should I use it?
A: It deletes all saved translations so they're generated fresh next time. Use it after you've corrected the original menu text and want the translation to catch up — otherwise the old, outdated translation would keep showing.
Q: I don't see AI Tools in my menu — why?
A: Either your venue hasn't turned on AI Tools, or your account doesn't have permission to use it. Check with a manager.
